#40. Champlevé enamel and Basse-taille on white metal of a woman in 18th c. apparel set in brass. Champlevé is an enameling technique which consists of cutting away cells in a metal plate and filling the depressions with pulverized vitreous enamel. Basse-taille, (French: “low-cut”), an enameling technique in which a metal surface is engraved or carved in low relief and then covered with translucent vitreous enamel. Note some surface scratches.
