Large Satsuma button depicting large decorated drum used with bugaku dance performances.

#12. Large Japanese Satsuma button depicting a large drum decorated with flames under a flowering cherry blossom tree with butterfly. The main element is the drum, which in bugaku dance performances would be next to the stage, be quite large and beautifully decorated. Similar to button found in button in “Satsuma Buttons and Buckles” by Nishida and Allen p 263 and 183. Satsumas are ceramics hand painted by Japanese artists for export. Late 19th c. - early 20th c.
