#219. Operculum shell set in gilded brass (?) button. An operculum shell, also known as a "cat's eye" or "Shiva eye" shell, is a calcareous lid-like trapdoor that seals the aperture of a snail's shell. It protects the snail's soft body from predators and prevents moisture loss when retracted into the shell. Operculum's vary in shape, but are often circular or oval. Note condition of rim. NBS Medium (13/16")
