#222. Two Japanese buttons of butterflies. The Satsuma has an unusual border with a large butterfly surrounded by a multitude of tiny butterflies. Satsuma are ceramics hand painted by Japanese artists for export. Late 19th c. - early 20th c. The other is a Kutani porcelain button that was made to either be used as a button or a hat pin. Kutani porcelain is characterized by the heavy brilliance of the five colors of green, yellow, red, purple, and navy blue that are applied to the bold and daring lines. Late 19th c. - early 20th c.
