#20. Likely c. 1930's and an example of “Japanisme"- a French term coined in late 19th c. describing craze for Japanese art and design in the west following the reopening of foreign trade with Japan in 1858. Transfer and paint with gold details under celluloid top set in metal button of a Japanese woman hanging carp “streamers." The carp streamers, or koinobori, flown in Japan on Children's Day are a symbol of strength, courage, and determination. The carp is a popular choice for this celebration because it is considered a spirited fish that can fight its way upstream.
